How Do I Check if a Domain Name Is Available? Print

  • 137

Applies to: everyone

Every domain name is unique — once someone registers it, nobody else can have it. So the first step of any website project is a quick availability check. It's free, takes seconds, and there's no obligation to buy.

Checking availability

  1. Go to our domain search page.
  2. Type the name you'd like (without www) into the search box and click Search.
  3. The results show at a glance whether the name is available, in .co.za, .com, .net, .org.za, .africa and more — with the price per year for each.

If your name is available

Don't sit on it! Good names get taken every day, and there's no way to reserve a domain other than registering it. Registering takes a few minutes — see How do I buy a Domain Name.

If your name is taken

You still have options: try a different extension (the .co.za might be free even if the .com isn't), a short variation (adding your industry or location, e.g. smithplumbing-ct.co.za), or a different word order. Our guide Top Tips for Choosing a Great Domain Name is full of practical ideas. If the current owner isn't actually using the domain, domains can sometimes be bought privately — but be prepared for a negotiation.

Frequently asked questions

Does searching for a name reserve it?
No — a search is just a lookup. The name is only yours once you've registered and paid.

Does my domain name affect Google rankings?
A clear, memorable name that matches your brand helps people find and trust you. Keywords in a domain can help a little, but don't force them — brandability beats keyword-stuffing.
